USM Honors Program

How to Apply

What Does Honors Look For in Applicants?

We look for people who are curious about the world around them, and who have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

For new USM admits and transfer students we look at transcript information, letters of recommendation and the essay in your USM application. Current USM students, we will ask you for a letter of recommendation from a USM faculty you have worked with recently.

Adult, transfer and current USM students can apply to begin Honors at any of three possible entry points: HON101, HON201 or HON301. Decisions about entry point are based on credit hours completed, GPA (3.0 or higher), and a well-rounded academic history.

Choosing Honors should be based on your interest in the courses and the opportunities to work closely with other students and faculty. Apply because it's what you want.

*USM Honors can not admit students who are presently in the GO Program at USM without express permission from our Director.

**The Russell Scholars Program is not part of The Honors Program. For information about RSP’s residential academic learning community on the Gorham Campus, visit: usm.maine.edu/rscholar.

Application Process

  1. 1. If you haven't already, apply to the University of Southern Maine. Once you are admitted as a USM student you may apply to USM Honors.
  2. 2. Fill out and submit the online application form.

Deadlines: Space is limited! First priority deadline for classes beginning fall 2009 will be March 2, 2009 but we continue to accept applications through June 30, 2009.
