Lewiston-Auburn College

The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College seeks an individual at the rank of Assistant Professor for a full-time tenure-track position in Social and Behavioral Sciences.  This position will begin in September 2013, pending final budgetary approval.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.  L-A is the second largest population center of Maine with significant diversity.  

QUALIFICATIONS:   Required: Doctorate in Psychology, Education, or related field; or ABD, if doctorate will be completed by September 1, 2013; a record or promise of effective teaching and record or planned trajectory of research and published scholarship; and child-based clinical or educational experience.  Preferred:  Familiarity with interdisciplinary approaches to the study of behavior.  Applicants should have strengths in some combination of early childhood development and education, child clinical psychology, school psychology, or other educational applications.  Teaching responsibilities will include introductory level and upper-division courses in support of our concentration in Early Childhood Studies and associated Early Childhood (Birth to 5) teacher certification, such as Psychosocial Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence, Assessing Individual Differences in Children, Attachment, Infant Mental Health, and Early Childhood Teaching Methods as well as possible other courses in support of the major (e.g., Introductory Psychology, Research Methods) or in LAC’s interdisciplinary Common Core curriculum. 

Preferred applicants will have interested in designing courses and curriculum in multi-disciplinary teams with colleagues in other degree programs offered by the college including Leadership and Organizational Studies, Arts and Humanities, Natural and Applied Sciences, a Masters in Occupational Therapy, and Teacher Education programs.  Student advising, outreach, and other service promoting program interests on local and statewide committees, as appropriate, are also required.  

Lewiston-Auburn College’s curriculum is marked by integration among the various disciplines within the liberal arts, academic and professional concentrations, the workplace, and the community.  The student population is largely non-traditional age and most have family and/or work responsibilities.  The faculty is committed to interdisciplinary perspectives, scholarly growth, and continual improvement of teaching.  Classes place heavy emphasis on writing and student participation.  Service learning and other community based projects are highly valued components of the curriculum that builds on the themes of Justice, Democracy, Difference, and Sustainability.
