2.1 About USM

USM is made up of eight academic units ( Applied Science, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Human Development, Law, Lewiston-Auburn College, Nursing, and the Muskie School of Public Service). It enrolls over 10,000 students and is the largest of the seven campuses in the University of Maine System.

The University of Southern Maine is the most cosmopolitan and diverse of Maine’s institutions of higher learning. It has major campus locations in Gorham with its small town atmosphere and in Portland, the state’s largest city and center of financial, business, and cultural activities. It also serves students in central Maine at its Lewiston-Auburn College.

As an urban comprehensive institution, USM is a major educational force in the development of southern Maine. It has the advantage of being located in an area of remarkable beauty, with Portland recently named one of America’s ten most livable cities.

More details about USM are available on-line to include the USM Fact Book.
