6.1 Exercise Facilities
Exercise is an important component of overall health and well-being,
including stress-reduction. Employees are encouraged to take advantage of our extensive
facilities for activities as wide-ranging as basketball, indoor/outdoor tennis, badminton,
volleyball, jogging, ice skating, squash, aerobics, yoga, martial arts, and more.
Convenient fitness centers have equipment such as free weights, Universal power circuit
stations, Stairmasters, treadmills, Liferower, and cross trainers. Please visit the
websites for the Sullivan Recreationa
and Fitness on the Portland campus and also Recreational Sports.
A fee of $75 /year provides full use of these facilities, and you
may obtain a personal locker with towel service for a minimal fee. Part-year and
spouse/significant other passes as well as guest fee arrangements are also available.
Another option is Lifeline,
a supervised comprehensive fitness program which is individualized for faculty/staff.
Non-credit tuition waivers may be used for membership.
6.2 Adjusting Your Work Station
Repetitive-motion injuries are one of the more frequent hazards of
the modern workplace. Sometimes adjusting your workstation and other precautions can help
you avoid problems. The Office of
Occupational Safety & Health offers ergonomic audits and ergonomic task analysis
among its services to employees.
6.3 Reporting Injuries
Any injury or suspected injury suffered in the course of your work
at USM must be reported to the Benefits
Injury Management Office by calling 780-5175. An Employee Injury Report Form must then
be completed and sent to 7 College Ave., Gorham, Maine. Any injury which requires more
than minor first aid must be seen at Bayside Employee Health ( either the injured employee
or supervisor may make the appointment with Bayside by calling 780-6631). For details
visit the Benefits website or call
780-5175.
6.4 Emergency Phone Numbers
If you are on-campus and have a police emergency, dial 911. Other emergency numbers for medical,
fire, counseling, and other urgent issues are available on the University Police Department website. You are
encouraged to print the website page and post the telephone numbers by your phone. The
site also has information regarding safety tips and sexual assault response services.
6.5 Smoking In The Workplace
University
policy prohibits smoking except in designated smoking areas.
Employees can receive assistance in ceasing to smoke through various
programs with certain charges covered through the Universitys Group Health Plan.
Consult with Benefits (780-5218) if you have any questions.
6.6 Substance Abuse Policy
The University
policy recognizes that substance abuse is a complex problem not easily resolvable by
personal effort alone and may require professional help and/or treatment. Employees are
encouraged to take advantage of available diagnostic, referral, counseling, and prevention
services. However, employees availing themselves of these services will not be granted
special privileges and/or exemptions from standard personnel practices applicable to job
performance requirements.
6.7 Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Employees sometimes encounter personal or family problems that
affect the quality of their professional and private lives. For help and more
information visit http://cigna.com.
Counseling and/or community referrals may involve issues such as
workplace conflict, substance abuse, indebtedness, or other issues which may act as
barriers to emotional and physical health.
