VAWA Measuring Effectiveness Initiative

The Catherine E. Cutler Institute for Child and Family Policy has a national reputation in applied research, evaluation, technical assistance, and training in a variety of areas affecting children and their families. The Institute has distinguished itself as an emerging, creative organization committed to supporting change in systems that serve children and families.  Its current areas of concentration include organizational improvement, child welfare, violence against women, early childhood development, youth and family support services, and justice.  The VAWA Measuring Effectiveness Initiative uses multi-method, multi-source data collection strategies to enable grantees funded by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) to measure the effectiveness of their OVW-administered Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) grants. 

The primary purpose of this position is to provide research support for the VAWA Measuring Effectiveness Initiative and to expand the Cutler Institute’s research and academic portfolio in the area of violence against women.  This position offers the exceptional opportunity for the right person to apply their skills, expertise, and accomplishments to the work of the Institute and to benefit from the Institute's reputation and its experienced, talented, and committed staff.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a proven record of funded research projects in a relevant field, strong writing and communications skills, experience in both qualitative and quantitative research, and an ability to work well in a team environment. 
This position is located in Portland, Maine which was recently named among the top twelve surprising, thriving and emerging world travel destinations for 2007 by Frommer's Travel Guides and Frommers.com. Portland was also named among the top 50 "Best Places for Business and Careers in the U.S." These rankings combine nine factors, including cost of doing business, job growth, income growth, educational attainment and crime rates. (Forbes Magazine, May 2006) and #14 in “Best Performing Cities” index, for its economic vitality based on measures that include employment and salary growth, with an emphasis on high-tech industries. (Milken Institute, California, November 2004).

Qualifications: Doctorate in psychology, sociology, education, or a related discipline and three years of relevant experience with an emphasis on issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and/or stalking. Demonstrated capacity to develop and manage research projects. Ability and willingness to travel nationally.
