The University of Southern Maine invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions.

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College of Nursing and Health Professions which is comprised of the School of Nursing and the Departments of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences and Recreation and Leisure Studies. The Dean is responsible for the continuing review, improvement and development of the following:  undergraduate programs in Nursing, Therapeutic Recreation, Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Health Sciences, and Radiation Therapy, and graduate programs in Nursing.  Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean is responsible for academic and curricular development; scholarship, research, faculty and staff development; strategic planning; budget allocation and supervision, and promotion of intra-department and inter-department collaboration and communication.  The Dean is also responsible for carrying out the instructional programs and implementing the educational and professional objectives of the College by working directly with department chairs and director, faculty, staff, and students to develop excellence in teaching, professional experience, scholarship, and public service programs.  Activities of the College under the responsibility of the Dean include maintaining alumni relations, representing the College in the annual and capital fundraising efforts of the University, and seeking grant support. Toward these ends, the Dean works directly with other colleges, schools, and programs within and outside the University.  The Dean serves as an advisor to USM’s Division of University Outreach and engages with other leaders around health and health policy matters in such groups as the Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health and the Muskie School’s Health Policy Institute.  As a member of the Provost’s Academic Council, the Dean makes recommendations to the Provost on matters related to faculty, personnel, curriculum, instruction, budgets and other academic concerns. USM has an enrollment of 10,400 students on three campuses: Gorham, Lewiston/Auburn and Portland. The College of Nursing and Health Professions offers classes on all three campuses with the Dean’s office located in Portland, Maine’s largest city and major center of financial, business, and cultural activities.

QUALIFICATIONS: The College seeks to appoint an individual who has an earned doctorate in a health-related profession. Candidates should have professional experience and/or clinical practice, and teaching experience in a health-related baccalaureate or graduate program. Candidates must demonstrate a broad understanding of all CONHP programs and qualify for tenure and appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in one of the academic units.

The position requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, respect for the academic process and shared governance, and an ability to optimize the use of faculty and fiscal resources. The Dean should possess an appreciation for the diverse disciplines, programs, and student body within the College, a clear vision of health-related education in a global economy, and a strong commitment to the mission of the College which centers on teaching, scholarship, and service.
