POLICY#: 101.9
SUBJECT: SENDING FLOWERS IN CASE OF SERIOUS ILLNESS OR DEATH
APPLIES TO: ALL EMPLOYEES
ISSUED BY: OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT ADMINISTRATION
EFFECTIVE DATE: 12/01/83
REVIEW/REVISION DATE: 05/01/88
Serious, prolonged illnesses or deaths are difficult periods for
affected employees and their families.
In the event of a serious, prolonged illness or death of an
employee or former long-term employee, the President shall
respond on behalf of the University by sending flowers or a
suitable alternative. The same shall be done upon the death of
the spouse or of a child of an employee. Donations, in lieu of
flowers, may not be made with University funds.
Individuals and departments within the University may wish to
send flowers or make other appropriate gestures of sympathy to
members of the University community and to their families at the
time of illness or death. However, these activities should be
undertaken personally and not at university expense.
Some variation in this policy may be required by circumstances
from time to time. Please contact the Executive Director of
University Relations when you know of situations which may
warrant a response under these guidelines and to discuss any
possible deviation from them.
