MaineStreet - Campus Solutions

Introduction to Campus Solutions (overview & hands-On)
This session will introduce participants to MaineStreet fundamentals such as navigation, search features, new terminology, user defaults and security. After learning the basics, participants will learn how to access and interpret information about students via the Student Services Center component and how to search for classes and access Class Rosters.

Introduction to Campus Solutions/Advisement (overview & hands-On)
This session will introduce participants to MaineStreet fundamentals such as navigation, search features, new terminology, user defaults and security. After learning the basics, participants will learn how to access and interpret information about advisees via the Academic Advisement component.

Faculty Center Session- Class Roster
This session covers Class Roster (formerly known as class list) http://www.usm.maine.edu/erp/ClassRosterFaculty.pdf which allows viewing and communicating via email with students. Also covered will be the Grade Roster feature which will be used for submitting final grades. A demonstration of GradeBook, MaineStreet's version of "Blackboard", (which is optional) will be shown. If necessary and time permitting, this session will review Class Search in MaineStreet.

Introduction to Registration (overview & hands-On)
MUST HAVE INTRODUCTION TO CAMPUS SOLUTIONS PRIOR TO TAKING THIS WORKSHOP

This session will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the registration process on how to register students in MaineStreet.  Course Search, Add/Drop, Swaps, and changing grade options.  This session assumes working knowledge of the information presented in the Introduction to Campus Solutions session.

Comprehensive Registration (overview & hands-On)
This session will build registration skills for those participants who deal with non-degree students in MaineStreet.  Covered in this session will be a review of Intro to Registration, Term Activation, set up of Appointment Dates, Service Indicator Removal, and the Program Action process.  This session assumes the participant has successfully completed the Introduction to Campus Solutions and the Introduction to Registration sessions.

Technology Series Workshops:

Access - Level I -  In this hands-on, practical introduction to Microsoft’s most popular database program, you’ll learn how to approach basic design issues, create fields, set field types, enter data, create basic queries to search a table, and create forms for data entry, create and print reports. Pre-requisite: Basic computing skills and use of a word processor. 

Access - Level II In this next step of your Access education, you’ll take an in-depth look at design issues with a concentration on the relational capabilities of Access 2000. Topics will include designing and creating linked tables, using queries to display with data from multiple tables, creating a main form and sub-form for data entry in multiple tables, and creating summarized and group reports. Pre-requisite: Access Level I or equivalent. 

Access - Level III This workshop is a continuation of Access Level I & II and will focus on form design, data control, and advanced reporting features. Topics will include using the various tools in form design including drop-down menus, various buttons, and navigation in forms. Reporting topics will include grouping and summarized reports, basic calculation and modifying existing reports. The course will also include a brief section on creating a password and security issues in Access. Pre-requisite: Access Level I and Access Level II or equivalent.

Computing Bootcamp I, II Are you frustrated by all those funky computer terms? Have you been bitten by spyware or other bugs? Would you like to know what's really going on in that cursed machine you have to use every day?

User Services developed Computing Boot Camp just for YOU. This boot camp will run for 3 hours on two days. Be one of the few, the proud, the certifiable!!! Click here for more info.

Electronic File Management Do you know where your files are? Basic file management skills are crucial to understanding your computer. This workshop will help you learn how to organize your files — create new folders; copy, move, delete, and rename files or folders. You’ll also get hands-on practice using Windows 2000, though the same concepts hold for Mac users.

Elluminate Live! is a web-based, interactive tool that allows you and your remote participants to share audio, an on-screen whiteboard and a variety of other features to enhance distance learning and meetings. USM and the Center for Technology Enhance Learning (CTEL) has licensed the use of Elluminate for up to 25 users at any one time. Use Elluminate as a web-based interactive replacement to conference calls.

This beginning level session will orient the user to using the many features of the software, configuring the system for audio, and incorporating the various application sharing features of the software into a meeting or training session. Information will also be distributing about the process of scheduling sessions, recording and retrieving the session, and displaying a PowerPoint presentation over the web to your participants.

Excel I This workshop will cover basic spreadsheet terminology and techniques, including labels, values, formulas, columns, rows, and justification. Learning these will enable the user to set up schedules, make lists and forms, etc. Participants are encouraged to bring projects to work on during the course.

Excel Level II Using Excel, this workshop will expand on the Spreadsheets course and will include functions in formulas, worksheet linking, charting, and using formatting and printing features.
Pre-requisite: Excel Primer or equivalent knowledge.

The Great Race: Office Integration
Join this two part seminar (3 hours each session) in which you will complete a project utilizing Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. During the first week, you will decide what your project will address and learn how to integrate information from all the various parts of the Office Suite. You might do your project with a partner. During week 2, you will complete your project and present it to the rest of the group. Your project can be a marketing-type presentation based on "reality" (something you really need to do for your job) or something fun and light-hearted.

GroupWise - For New Employees Need a quick overview of Groupwise? This workshop is intended for new users with lots of hands-on fun.

GroupWise - Beyond the Basics This 2 hour hands-on class is intended for GroupWise users who have attended a GroupWise roll-out seminar and have some experience using GroupWise. E-mail topics will include an advanced e-mail section detailing address books, creating groups (for sending 1 message to multiple recipients), and creating and using Rules for automatically processing your incoming mail. Calendaring topics will include detailed information on posted and group appointments, recurring appointments, granting proxy access and rights to your calendar, and managing multiple calendar views. A Q&A period will conclude the class. Pre-requisite: GroupWise is installed on your system, and you have some experience using it.

Office 2007: An Overview
The new version of Microsoft Office has hit the ground running. This session will provide an overview of the most popularly used components (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), highlighting the subtle differences in this very different interface. (Most tasks are the same, just look very different now....) Attend this session and be ready to roll when you get your upgrade!

PowerPoint XP - Level I If you present-in a classroom, at conferences, at meetings, or you support someone who does, you need to know PowerPoint. In this introductory workshop, you’ll learn to create electronic presentations that incorporate charts, tables, graphs, still images, color and background that will make you look professional no matter what the setting. No pre-requsite.

PowerPoint XP- Level II This will be a hands-on workshop building on the basics of using PowerPoint from level I. Level II will focus on advanced features of PowerPoint such as the use of Master slides, graphs, charts, transiitions, automations, adding music and hyperlinks. Pre-requisite: PowerPoint Level I or equivalent.

Spreadsheets - Level I This workshop will cover basic spreadsheet terminology and techniques including labels, values, formulas, columns, rows, and justification. Learning these will help you set up schedules, make lists and forms, and keep track of essential budget items. Participants are encouraged to bring projects to work on during the course.

Spreadsheets - Level II - Excel Using Excel, this workshop will expand on Spreadsheets Level I and will include functions in formulas, worksheet linking, charting, and using formatting and printing features. Pre-requisite: Spreadsheets level I or equivalent.

TRAINERS will provide tips, tricks, and techniques for various components of the jungle known as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and some other goodies. YOU will provide your questions and problems for hands-on excitement!

WebDSIS The Information Reporting Department will offer training sessions to staff and faculty who would like to become familiar with the user-friendly UMS Student Information System known as WebDSIS (Distributed Student Information System). WebDSIS provides a real-time ‘window’ into ISIS, our current Student Information System.

Office and Finance Administration

Elements of Work-Study Supervision This workshop will help you understand administrative policies and procedures for work-study, §identify supervisory roles and responsibilities,§identify critical pitfalls and ways to overcome them, §explore effective supervisory practices, and §observe working models within USM.

How To Use GL Inquiry This workshop introduces General Ledger (GL) Inquiry to new users and provides intermediate users with an opportunity to review basic concepts. It will explain how the General Ledger (GL) is used at USM, provide tips for basic navigation in the GL Inquiry & provide a brief overview of PeopleSoft chartfields and the chart of accounts.

Communication Series

Bouncing Back: Resiliency in Times of Stress: Resiliency is your ability to bounce back or persevere in times of stress.  Each of us has an innate ability to be flexible and adapt—but that ability needs to be nurtured and practiced.  In this facilitated discussion, we will explore ways to:

  • recognize your existing resiliency strengths
  • tap into your problem-solving skills
  • understanding the resiliency "cycle" that will help propel you from resistance to resilience
  • appreciate that each of us has our own style and pace when dealing with change and resiliency
  • create a "blueprint" for practicing resiliency

Courageous Conversations:  Having conversations that involve conflict, hidden agendas, strong emotions, or a perceived difference can be hard and we often avoid them.  But the price we pay for avoiding them can sometimes mean more stress on the job, broken relationships, or even illness.  Courageous Conversations offers discussion about what holds us back from these talks, and importantly, it offers specific strategies and tools for opening and responding to a "courageous" conversation so your voice can be heard, your integrity can remain in tact, and your life can be ultimately more peaceful.

Generational Insights across the Workplace:  What are some of the perceived differences across generations and how do they impact our lives as we live and work together?  This workshop will explore some of the myths and realities of generational influences and examine principles to help guide us through the often sensitive and fascinating realm of generational perceptions.  Ultimately, we will look at the places where we come together and how we can work most productively together.

Communicating with Confidence: Saying What You Mean; Meaning What You Say Most of us spend nearly all of our waking hours communicating with others. Even when you don’t say a word, your facial expressions, body language, appearance, and other signals send messages to others. Sometimes what we say may not be what we mean. This workshop will involve discussion, reflection, and skill practices to help you uncover your strengths and areas to improve in communicating with others. Enhancing your communication skills can have a positive impact on your relationships with others and your overall job satisfaction. During the workshop and with ongoing support, you will:
Assess your strengths and areas to improve in communicating with others.
Practice specific tips to enhance your body language, tone of voice, and word choice
Identify helpful questions in gathering more information, uncovering needs, and building relationships with your customers, students, co-workers, and others.
Understand how to positively and assertively communicate what you intend.
Commit to a professional action plan to apply these new skills on the job.

Facilitating Effective Meetings Meetings can (and should) be productive and fun! Learn what it takes to facilitate successful meetings that others look forward to attending. As a result of participating in this workshop, you will recognize roles, responsibilities, and desired skills of meeting facilitators; understand the elements of designing and delivering effective meetings; and learn tools, techniques, and tips for leading meetings.

Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI); Understanding and Appreciating “Types” The MBTI uses a personality questionnaire to indicate an individual’s preferences, tendencies, and characteristics. During this workshop, participants will learn type concepts in order to understand how psychological preferences influence how we take in information and make decisions; the eight MBTI preferences, valuing individual differences, and their best type fit, based on results of their indicator report (pre-work of completing the MBTI questionnaire required) and self-assessment.

Creating a Workplace of Dignity: Rankism is defined as the "abusive, discriminatory, or exploitative behavior toward people who have less power because of their lower rank in a particular hierarchy." In this workshop, we will identify ways in which our language, actions, and beliefs can reflect a culture of rankism, and more importantly, how we can examine our actions and beliefs to eliminate rankism and create instead a workplace of dignity. 

Do It Now! Postponing Procrastination:
“Procrastination and worry are the twin thieves that will try to rob you of your brilliance—but even the smallest action will drive them from your camp.” --Gil Atkinson

Do you dread getting your car inspected? Do you put off performance management? Are you ashamed because you didn’t return that phone call? In this workshop, we’ll take a serious look at the patterns of procrastination (you’ll be surprised) and analyze the myriad items that can get in the way of getting things done. We’ll create an action plan for getting organized and then we’ll discuss ways to actually implement the plan, and yes, even follow up. You’ll come away with a greater understanding of what gets in your way and a personalized strategy to overcome procrastination.

Speechcraft is presented by collaboration with local Toastmasters Clubs and USM’s Employee Education and Development.
