Dr. Barlas |
September 2007
USM’s Lewiston Auburn College Muslim Students Association (LACMSA) will present a discussion with Ithaca College Professor Asma Barlas, entitled “Islam, Gender, and the War on Terror”, on Monday, September 24 at 4 p.m. Barlas’ recent research focuses on Islam and, in particular, how Muslims interpret and live it.
Dr. Barlas is a professor in the Department of Politics at Ithaca College and is the founding director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity. She has a B.A. in English Literature and Philosophy and an M.A in Journalism from Pakistan, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Denver in Colorado.
Born in Pakistan, Barlas was one of the first women to be inducted into the Foreign Service. Fired from this post by Pakistan’s General Zia ul Haq for criticizing his military regime, she then joined an opposition paper, The Muslim, as assistant editor but was forced to leave the country in 1983. She then came to the U.S. where she obtained political asylum. Barlas has received several fellowships and grants, including from the United Nations Department of Public Information, the American Association of University Women, and the American Institute of Pakistan Studies.
This event is being sponsored by Elizabeth Eames (Bates College), TASDLAC, Abraham Peck, and USM and light refreshments will be served. The campus is located at 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston.
