New Dean Appointed at Lewiston-Auburn
College
C.E. Zark VanZandt will be the next dean of the University
of Southern Maine Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC). VanZandt
will be the third dean of LAC, following Betty Robinson. He
currently is interim director of USM Libraries and will take
the helm of LAC beginning July 1. "I'm delighted we've
found in Zark an outstanding match for the leadership and
further development of the campus," says current Dean
Betty Robinson.
VanZandt, an associate dean and professor of human resource
development in USM's College of Education & Human Development
(CEHD), earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Michigan
State University, and holds an Ed.D. from the University of
Maine. He has taught classes in school counseling and career
development in CEHD, and supervised school counseling internships.
He has been interim director of USM Libraries since May, 2002.
"I was attracted to the dean's position because of LAC's
commitment to interdisciplinary education, student-centered
learning, and its partnerships with the greater Lewiston-Auburn
community," says VanZandt. "I'm really looking forward
to working with a very dedicated faculty and staff, and both
participating in, and contributing to the culture that makes
LAC such a special place."
Robinson earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Boston University,
and was the first faculty person hired at LAC in 1988. Before
coming to USM, she taught at New Hampshire College, Colby
College, Boston University and the University of Maryland.
She plans to return to the classroom, teaching in both the
graduate and undergraduate Leadership Studies Program at LAC,
after a one-year sabbatical. During the sabbatical, she plans
to research adding globalism into the curriculum, and will
investigate setting up international partnerships for LAC's
Leadership Studies Program. To this end, she has plans in
place to travel to the United Kingdom, and is looking into
visiting South Africa as well.
Robinson says of her tenure as dean, "I never dreamed
of going into administration. However, based on my experience
as dean of LAC, I expect this is the pinnacle of my career.
It has been a great honor--the people at LAC and in the community
are very special to me."
