This course continues the instructor’s series on English history & culture, focusing on the Elizabethan Age:   Elizabeth I, literature, expansion, and cultural heritage-the English Renaissance.

Instructor: Barbara Randall
Barbara is a retired English literature teacher from Edward Little High School and a former dean at Bates College.  She is an enthusiastic traveler and a frequent instructor at Senior College.

Tuesday Classes

The Science of Horticulture

8 Tuesdays 9:30-11:30 a.m.

September 22, 29,October 6, 13, 20, 27 November 3, 10 Class limit:  25

A consideration of the science behind the practice of  plant husbandry.  Subjects include taxonomy, morphology, plant adaptations, soils, pruning, transplanting and poisonous plants.

Instructor: Edward Corbett
Dr. Corbett earned his B.S. in Horticulture and an M.S. in Plant Physiology at UMO, a Ph.D in Plant Breeding at UNH, and has taught Plant Science at UConn for over 30 years.

Luther:  Gospel, Law and Reformation
7 Tuesdays 1:00-3:00 p.m.
September 22,October 6, 13, 20, 27,November 3, 10. Class limit:  20

This course will concern itself with such questions as: How did Martin Luther launch the Protestant Reformation and create the modern world? What was so different in Luther’s theology compared to that of the Roman Catholic Church?

Instructor:  Alan Elze
Alan is introducing a new program to Senior College,  that of offering classes on DVD, presented by nationally known scholars. Alan will be the facilitator for the class.

Special Destinations
6 Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m. September 22, 29,October 6, 13, 20, 27 Class limit: 20

This course provides an opportunity to continue learning about our region by visiting historical sites, museums, public gardens and places of business.  Each week we will travel to a different destination.  The class will often gather at a nearby restaurant before heading back to the USM LAC campus.
All entrance fees are met by Senior College:  however, lunch and travel are the responsibility of the participants.

Participants will meet in the lobby by the College Bookstore prior to the trips.  Driving directions will be available at that time.  All members are responsible for their own transportation.

Tour Guide:  Dorothy Rupert
Dot Rupert is a retired elementary teacher whose interests include gardening, cross-country skiing, traveling, orchestral performances and operating a berry farm in Turner.  Dot is a seasoned tour director for Senior College with a loyal following and is a past member of the Senior College Board of Directors.

American Ideals: The Founding of a Republic of Virtue  
6 Tuesdays 9:30-11:30 a. m.

Class limit: 30

This course will have as its focus the principles that guided the founding of our country, the conditions that led to the fateful break with England and the attempt to design institutions capable of fulfilling the  ideals expressed in the founding documents.  Special attention will be given to answering the question: Who founded the United States and created the Constitution?

Open enrollment to Schooner residents only will begin on Monday, August 24, 2009. Open enrollment to our membership will begin on Monday, August 31, 2009.

Instructor:  Charles W. Plummer, Ph. D
A long time Senior College instructor, at both the USM Lewiston-Auburn and Midcoast Senior College programs, Charles holds degrees in Education, Administration and Supervision, and in Religious Studies and Metaphysics.  He is a retired educator and administrator who spent nearly 30 years with the Auburn school system.

Wednesday Classes

Stephen King: His Popularity vs. Our Fears
8 Wednesdays 9:30-11:30 a. m.

Please note:  NO CLASS on November 11 (Veteran’s Day).

Stephen King is one of the most popular American authors of horror fiction. The class will read and discuss one of his novels and three or more of his short stories to see why he is so widely read.  Come along; it won’t be too scary!

Instructor: Ila Green
Ila majored in English at UMO and has a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from USM- Gorham.
She taught English and reading for thirty years in public schools and has ten years experience in guidance counseling.

Writers’ Workshop
6  Wednesdays 1:00-3:00 p.m.
September 23, 30,October 7, 14, 21, 28 
Class Limit: 30

The workshop will be a place to bring your writing - fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, concepts or finished work--for constructive comments by class members.  Some participants may want to work toward publication. Others may just want to hear some responses to ideas. All writers are welcome.

Instructor: Sarah Andersen Lawrence
Sarah has a B. A. from Lawrence College and an M. A. from the University of Minnesota.  She has worked as a teacher and as a journalist in corporate communications.

The Civil War:
A Different Perspective
8 Wednesdays   1:00-3:00 p.m.
September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21, 28November 4, 18 Class Limit: 30

Please note:  NO CLASS on November 11 (Veteran’s Day).

The course will cover the economic, political and social forces that led to, shaped and prolonged the Civil War. From Lincoln’s election to Reconstruction, those forces influenced the roles played by the courts, newspapers, government officials and ordinary citizens and changed lives for years to come.

Instructor: Robert M. Gilbert
Robert is a retired educator and administrator with the Auburn school system.  He received a B.A.
from Bates College and an M. Ed from UMO.  Bob has taught a chronological series of American history courses at Senior College.

Thursday Classes

Verdi, His Life and Work: A Video Presentation
8 Thursdays   9:30-11:30 a.m.
September 24, October 1, 8, 15, 22, no class the 29th,November 5, 12, 19. Class limit: 30

A beautifully done video biography containing many opera excerpts will be shown, followed by complete video operas from different periods of the composer’s life.

Instructor: John Serrage
John is a retired physician, professional church organist, opera lover and lecturer. This is the latest of his series of opera courses at Senior College.

Digital Cameras
4 Thursdays 9:30 -11:30 a.m.
September 24, October 8, 15, 22. Class limit: 20.

  • What can I do with a digital camera?
  • Does it have to be expensive?
  • What is the difference between 3x optical and 4x digital zoom?
  • How do I get the pictures from the camera to the computer? 
These questions and many others will be answered.  We will discuss the most recent innovations of the digital cameras and the advantages of digital over film cameras. This is an interactive class. Bring your camera.

Instructor: Alan Elze
With over 30 years of experience with a 35mm film camera, Alan moved to digital 5 years ago and discovered a whole new world of photography.

Ancient Rome and Sicily
7 Thursdays 1:00-3:00 p.m.
September 24,October 8, 15, 22, 29,November 5, 12. Class limit: 25

This course will visit ancient sites of Rome and Sicily utilizing slides. Special attention will be given to St. Peter’s and the other major churches in Rome, along with the Vatican Museum, the Forum, Coliseum, fountains and other notable sites. The focus will shift to the island of Sicily, examine its history and visit the Greek ruins, the Roman villa in Piazza Armeni, and sites in Palermo, Siracusa and Catania.

Alan has taught a variety of courses over the past several years at Senior College. He is retired from the U.S. Navy and traveled extensively, coordinating educational tours for crewmembers.

Writing Our Stories

Class limit:  15

Discover how much fun a writing group can be. Grammar will not be corrected unless requested and class comments will be optional.  No previous writing experience is required. This class is limited to 15.

Instructor:  Anita Greenblatt
A graduate of Andover College and a life long-learner, Anita has been an instructor for the Auburn Adult Education program for several years.

Introduction to Computing
8 Fridays 9:30-11:30 a.m.
September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 November 6, 13. Class Limit:  20.

This is a basic computing course which will cover uses of e-mail, internet research, and writing using Microsoft Word.

Instructor: Nancy Whitehouse
Nancy has an MBA from Western New England College and an MA from the University of Connecticut.  She is the Curriculum Technology Coordinator at USM LAC and had taught computer classes to all age groups since 1985.

Contemporary Fiction North of the Border
8 Fridays 1:00-3:00 p.m.
September 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30November 6, 13. Class Limit: 20

Class members will read and discuss three contemporary Canadian works of fiction, Margaret Atwood’s Dancing Girls and Other Stories (1977); Robertson Davies’ The Cunning Man (1994); and Alice Munro’s Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage (2001).  All are set in our time and are the work of writers who deserve more readers than they have today.

Instructor:  Lincoln Ladd
Lincoln Ladd is a retired educator, who has taught at North Carolina University and U.N.C. Greensboro, and the University of Maine at Farmington and Augusta.  He has presented several literature courses at Senior College and is a member of the Board of Directors.
