Matthew Edney was educated at University of London (B.Sc. 1983) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (M.S. 1985; Ph.D. 1990). He taught in the department of Geography at the State University of New York at Binghamton before moving to USM in 1995. At USM, he teaches in both Geography-Anthropology and American & New England Studies. Since 2007, he has held a concurrent position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as director of the History of Cartography Project.
