Names like "Assinais", "Cadodaguios" are added in Texas, "S. Diego la Conception" in New Mexico, "St. Paulo" in Florida. These new place-names, not on BACK KEY STATE 1, are present on Popple's large 20-Sheet map (and C&M 4-Sheet map) but not on his Key Map ("la Conception" and "St. Diego" are marked as two separate towns on Popple's large map). "N. Orleans" appears in Louisiana. A number of new place-names are shown in the Great Lakes area and between the Great Lakes and Hudson Bay. An island named "Ganeonskaon" is placed in the north-east part of Lake Erie. LOCATION: New-York Historical Society, New York State Library (Albany). | |
| PROBST KEY | 1782 A close copy of Le ROUGE KEY STATE 2 (this is not a direct copy of Popple's British original), rather than Le ROUGE KEY STATE 3 - as evidenced by virtually the same title between border lines at top "AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE || Suivent [sic] la Carte de Pople [sic] faite a Londres en 20 feuilles [sic]" and the spelling of "pied" rather than "pieds" in "RENVOY" legend. Title in cartouche at bottom left: "NOVA || MAPPA GEOGRAPHICA || AMERICÆ || SEPTENTRIONALIS || in suas praecipuas Partes divisa || Sumptibus Ioh: Mich: Probst, Aug: Vind: || Ao MDCCLXXXII". Imprint below border in bottom left: "Gravée p Iean George Probst fils". Differences from Le ROUGE KEY STATE 2 are: (1) Lake Champlain has two branches on the south, as shown below, instead of just one like on all other Key Maps; (2) a small engraved ship appears south-east of Porto Rico, not present on any other Key Map; (3) spelling of some place-names within the map and words in the "RENVOY", for example: Probst - "Cilendres", LeRouge -"Cilindres".
