Derivatives and Copies of the Popple Map

Popple's 1733 map was used as a source for many later maps. Some, like Bellin's Carte de la Louisiane et des Pays Voisins (1744, 1750), Seale's A Map of North America with the European Settlements & whatever else is remarkable in ye West Indies (1747), and Seale's A New Map of North America wherein is exactly described all ye European Settlements with whatever else is remarkable in the West Indies (c. 1756, 1776) made use of Popple's map selectively for parts of the total area covered. For some, like Alexander/Turner's Map No. 1 in the Bill in the Chancery of New-Jersey (1747), or Evans' Map of Pensilvania, New-Jersey, New-York, and the Three Delaware Counties (1749), one would be hard-pressed to find any connection at all, if it were not for published comments of the mapmakers themselves. [note 44, note 45] Listed below, in chronological order, are only these maps where: (1) the entire area covered by the map is copied from Popple and (2) it is copied from Popple virtually unchanged.

Catesby 1734 and later CATESBY, Mark (1734, 1754, 1771 and later ) - A Map of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands with the Adjacent Parts. 603 mm width x 438 mm height. (Cumming 1998, No. 210; Mengel 1983, No. 476, No. 477, No. 478). Note 50. LOCATION: NYPL.

Keith 1738 KEITH, William (1738) - A New Map of Virginia humbly Dedicated to ye Right Hon.ble Thomas Lord Fairfax. 1738. 210 mm width x 330 mm height. (Cumming 1998, No. 240). Note 51. For a reproduction of virtually the whole map see Smiley (1988, Fig. 46). LOCATION: NYPL.

Stephens c.1739 STEPHENS (c. 1739, 1739, 1746?) - A Map of the Brittish-Plantations on the Continent of America. Stephens Fecit. 299 mm width x 345 mm height. This map first appeared in volume 30 of the 1st edition of Thomas Salmon's Modern History published in London in 1737. However, the map was probably inserted only into copies of this first edition that were bound in 1739 - many copies do not have this map or it is bound randomly in volumes 28-31. On this first edition of the map there is no engraved volume and page enumeration or any other annotation in the upper-left corner above border. The map was reissued at p. 425 in the 3rd volume of the 2nd edition of Thomas Salmon's Modern History published in London in 1739 - with engraved "Vol. 3. p. 425." in upper-left corner above the border of map. It probably also appeared (no copy located) at p. 406 in the 3rd volume of the 3rd edition of Salmon's Modern History published by Stephen Austen et al in London in 1746 - with engraved "Vol. 3. p. 406." in upper-left corner above the border of map. Compass rose above title cartouche is centered around the 71st degree of longitude. "Fall of Niagara" annotation present above "LAKE ERIE". Lowery & Phillips (1912, No. 277) attributed it incorrectly to Moll. See also Sotheby's sale of "The Library of the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Granard", London, July 21, 1993, description of Lot No. 534. "A" in center below border. "UUU" in lower-right below border. Compass rose above title cartouche is centered around the 68th degree of longitude. No "Fall of Niagara" annotation above "LAKE ERIE". A copy of Stephens' c.1739 map, from a new and different plate. This map appeared in the 3rd volume of the Irish edition of Thomas Salmon's Modern History published by George Grierson in Dublin in 1739. It also appeared later in the Irish edition of Thomas Salmon's Modern History published by William Williamson in Dublin in 1755. Lowery & Phillips (1912, No. 277) attributed it incorrectly to Moll. For picture of map see Arkway (1999, Item 126). See also Sotheby's sale of "The Library of the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Granard", London, July 21, 1993, description of Lot No. 534.
