BA in Foreign Languages (Self-Designed Major)

The minimum number of credits (exclusive of the University’s Core curriculum) required for the self-designed major in foreign languages: 36 or 38, depending on the selection of languages. For grade requirements, please refer to the Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures section of the academic catalog.

Courses & Requirements

For a major in foreign languages, students may choose any two of the following languages and take these courses in the languages of their choice:

French: FRE 301, 302, and either 330 or 331; as well as three classes of the students' choice among the courses in civilization (FRE 291, 292, 293, 294), language (FRE 303, 305) and literature (FRE 367,467,469)

German: GER 321, 322, 351H, 352H, 281H, 470

Latin: LAT 251, 252, and two semesters of LAT 470: CLA 292I or HTY 304; either CLA 283H or 384H

Russian: RUS 281H, 301, 302, 321, 351, 470

Spanish: SPA 300, 304, 305, 332, 351H, and 352H or 450

In addition, it is strongly recommended that students take CLA 171E or an Indo-European linguistics course.
