News ReleasesUSM Welcomes Students and Faculty for Start of 2006-2007 School Year August 30, 2006USM is preparing the kick off for the 06-07 school year with welcome events for commuter students, a special move-in day for the Class of 2010, community service projects, and other activities designed to encourage interaction among students, faculty and staff. Approximately 1,670 students will live in residence halls on the Portland and Gorham campuses, with 1,375 residing on the Gorham campus and 178 in Portland Hall on Congress St., Portland. Southern Maine Community College students also have rooms in Portland Hall, making the total headcount in that residence 300. Demand for on campus housing remains strong with 133 temporary triple occupancy rooms in Gorham residence halls. To address this increased demand, construction continues on a new, $21 million residence hall in Gorham, slated to open September 2007. This new hall will accommodate 296 upperclassmen and graduate students in apartment/suite style quarters, and is the first new residence hall built since Philippi Hall opened in 2001. Residence halls are funded through room fees, not state dollars. Approximately 10,500 students are expected to take classes this coming year, though final enrollment figures will be available in October. USM also welcomes 16 new faculty and two new deans. The new dean at USM’s School of Business is James B. Shaffer, the former CEO of Guy Gannett Communications, Inc., of Portland. Associate Professor of Nursing Marianne W. Rogers was named interim dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions, replacing Jane Kirschling, who left USM early this summer to become dean of the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. New this year is a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering offered through the School of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology (ASET), and delivered in partnership with the University of Maine (UMaine) College of Engineering in Orono. Approved last January, the degree addresses the growing need of regional manufacturing and other technology companies for more mechanical engineers.
