Local Students Bike To Baltimore
July, 2004
Nine nights, ten days, 680 miles, 11 flats, and a whole lot
of sore muscles later, a group of USM faculty and students
have done their part to promote healthier lifestyles and alternative
transportation.
Jay Myers, an instructor of sports medicine at the University
of Southern Maine, along with senior sports medicine majors
Mike Thompson of Pittsfield, Casey Holmes of Albion, and USM
adjunct instructor Arlene Verre recently biked from USM to
a national conference in Baltimore.
The four were on the bicycling journey to the national convention
of NATA, or the National Athletics Training Association. The
group averaged 70 miles a day, pedaling for six hours a day.
Cyclists are not allowed on interstates, so the group traveled
mainly on rural routes and back roads. "It was a matter of
physical determination, mental determination and teamwork,"
Myers said. "It was a good challenge. I think we all really
enjoyed it."
The four are now discussing a trip to Indianapolis sometime
next year.
