USM Child and Family Center Receives Fifth Accreditation
April 20, 2004
The University of Southern Maine Child and Family Center
has once again gained national recognition. It was recently
awarded its fifth accreditation from the National Association
for the Education of Young Children. To qualify, a center
must display excellence in a variety of areas including teacher
to child interactions, family and teacher relations, professional
development, health and safety, and food services. A recent
article in Child Care Information Exchange (March/April 2004)
showed that only 3.84 percent of Maine childhood programs
are accredited, and only 8.52 percent are accredited nationwide.
USM's center provides care on both the Portland and Gorham
campuses reserving 80 percent of its enrollment for the children
of students and 20 percent for those of employees. Occasionally
alumni and community members may be eligible for care also.
Care is offered to children aged six weeks to five years in
Portland, and in Gorham a certified kindergarten program is
housed for children of up to six years of age as well.
