USM Student Club reaches 3,500 Community Service Hours
April 1, 2004
In it's tenth anniversary year, the USM Circle K Club has
quietly racked up more than 3,500 hours of community service.
Some 30 USM club members have volunteered 2,000 hours more
than any club in New England, which is almost half the total
of all New England clubs combined. The group recently received
14 awards at the latest Circle K district convention in February,
including first place for club achievement, first place for
their newsletter, and most service hours worked.
USM's Circle K Club has participated in numerous volunteer
projects to benefit USM and the Maine community. They recently
conducted a 24-hour Serve-A-Thon in which they painted walls
at the YMCA, served breakfast to the homeless, and cleaned
up Saco Bay Trails, among other things. The have also recently
done fundraising for Camp Sunshine, and spent their spring
break cleaning and renovating the facility.
The Circle K Club at USM is one of more than 500 located
on campuses all across the world. It is a service organization
dedicated to promoting leadership, fellowship and service
in their schools and communities. The Circle K Clubs are sponsored
by the Kiwanis Club, a service organization of more than 300,000
business professionals from 91 countries, who sponsor service
projects and organizations that address the needs of the world's
children and young adults.
