Portland, ME: The KeyBank of Maine Foundation has awarded
$25,000 to the Muskie School of Public Service at the University
of Southern Maine, to endow a graduate student scholarship
in honor of Maine's former governor Kenneth B. Curtis.
"We are pleased to be able to honor Ken Curtis and recognize
his long history of leadership and his commitment to public
service in Maine," said Kathryn G. Underwood, president, Maine
District, KeyBank N.A. "KeyBank has always valued education.
Not only does a better educated workforce help American businesses
compete in this increasingly technical and complex global
marketplace, but an educated citizenry has the knowledge,
skills and abilities to help society as a whole."
In addition to serving as Maine's governor from 1967-75,
Kenneth B. Curtis has held many other positions in government
and the nonprofit sector, including U.S. ambassador to Canada,
Maine's secretary of state, president of Maine Maritime Academy,
and trustee of Susan L. Curtis Foundation. Curtis is particularly
recognized for modernizing Maine state government while governor
and laying the groundwork for the greater role states play
in U.S. governance today.
USM's Muskie School offers master's degree programs in community
planning and development, health policy and management, and
public policy and management, as well as a doctoral degree
in public policy. The KeyBank Scholarship to honor Ken Curtis
will be available to students on an annual basis.
