USM and CMCC Joint Course A Success
April 26, 2004
The University of Southern Maine's Environmental Safety and
Health and Central Maine Community College's Occupational
Health and Safety programs, successfully offered a joint course
on Industrial Hygiene this semester. Four USM and four CMCC
students participated in the experiment sparked by the need
to cut costs for Maine's public universities. The collaboration
allowed CMCC students to receive instruction from Maine's
only doctorate-level certified industrial hygienist, and afforded
USM students the use of CMCC's laboratories.Ê
The experiment was proposed by CMCC Department Chair of Occupational
Health and Safety Tom Ryan, and further approved by Dr. Sharon
D'Orsie, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at USM.
