The University of Southern Maine Alumni Association and USM's
Albert Brenner Glickman Family Library in Portland are collaborating
on making a public open house at the Library memorable for
fans of author Lois Lowry.
On Saturday, June 5, fans will be able to eat brunch with
Lowry from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the University Room for Special
Events in the Glickman Family Library, located at the intersection
of Bedford St. and Forest Ave. Tickets are $15 and can be
purchased by calling the Alumni Association at 780-4110. Tickets
must be reserved in advance. Proceeds of the brunch will benefit
the USM Alumni Scholarship Fund.
Lowry will be reading from and signing copies of her new
book, "Messenger," from 2-4 p.m. on June 5 in the University
Room for Special Events. Copies of "Messenger" will be available
for purchase in the library. A display of Lowry's past books
will be on display in the UnumProvident Great Reading Room,
also located on the 7th floor. There is no charge for the
reading and book signing.
Lowry, a 1973 USM alumna, began her writing career freelancing
for Down East and Yankee magazines,The New York Times and
the Boston Globe. She began writing children's books and books
for young adults, winning Newbery Awards for "Number the Stars"
and "The Giver." She is also the author of the popular series
of Anastasia books.
Her friendship with Ann N. Knowles, a resident of Yarmouth
and a member of the USM Alumni Association Board of Directors,
led to her invitation to appear at the Glickman Family Library
on Saturday.
The open house at the Glickman Family Library is an opportunity
for the public to visit the newly finished top three floors
of the library, which opened April 15 thanks to more than
$3.3 million in private donations.
The open house runs from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and features a guided
tour beginning at 1 p.m. The tour will showcase new facilities
which are open to the public. For more information, call 780-4270.
Those facilities include the seventh floor Alfred and Dorothy
Suzi Osher University Pavilion, which features the UnumProvident
Great Reading Room, and The University Room for Special Events.
The 200-seat room was made possible through a gift from USM
alumna Barbara M. Briggs and her husband, Dr. Russell C. Briggs.
The sixth floor features the Mildred Brenner Glickman Special
Collections Area, which houses the Kevin P. and Sherry L.
McCarthy and Family Reading Room; the Mary Walton Giamatti
Seminar Room; and the Bernard and Shirley Kazon Exhibit Area,
among other facilities. The sixth floor also is home to the
Jean Byers Sampson Center for Diversity in Maine. Furniture
from Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers, which has furnished libraries
across the nation for 25 years, is used on the sixth and seventh
floors.
The fifth floor features an electronic classroom made possible
by gifts from the Verizon Foundation and Norway Savings Bank.
The floor also is home to the new Hagge Family Student Computing
Area, and the AAA Northern New England Cafe.
The renovations added 224 new student seats, 56 computer
workstations, and a total of 26,500 additional square feet
of space over the current total of 36,000.
