Mattson-New York Times Lecture at Osher Map Library

Maps will be used to illustrate the changing nature of America's
national identity in a lecture scheduled for 6:30 p.m., this
Thursday, April 29, in USM's Glickman Family Library, Portland.
Professor John Rennie Short of Syracuse University will give
the 7th Mattson-New York Times Lecture. Short will speak on
"Cartographic Encounters in the West," from 6:30
to 7:30 p.m. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. The program
marks the first public event in the University Room for Special
Events on the top floor of the Glickman Library. It is free
and open to the public.
The program is sponsored by the Osher Library Associates
and the USM Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic

Short is author and editor of numerous books and articles,
most recently "Representing the Republic: Mapping the
United States, 1600 - 1900" (Reaktion, 2001), "Alternative
Geographies" (Prentice Hall, 2000), and "Globalization
and the City" (Longman Higher Education, 1999).
