USM Model UN Members to Attend Conference in Egypt
March 19, 2004
Eight University of Southern Maine students will be leaving
Portland on Saturday, March 20, to attend this yearÍs Harvard
World Model United Nations Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh,
Egypt, which begins on March 28. At the conference, sponsored
by the Harvard University Model UN student organization, students
from 85 schools worldwide will participate in a five-day UN
international conference simulation.
Each school will be representing a different country, for
which they will prepare and negotiate draft resolutions before
the attending international community. USM has a history of
choosing third world countries and will this year represent
Liberia. Model UN member Elizabeth Mann says, "We like third
world countries because it letÍs us step outside a westernized
frame of mind."
USM's students raised money for the trip through bake sales,
car washes, bottle drives, and a combination of support from
local businesses and USM student organizations on campus.
The students travelling to Egypt are Elizabeth Mann of Kittery;
Emily Ainsworth of Portland; Vanesa Saric and Julia Edwards
of South Portland; David Stearns and Jensine Fraser of Westbrook;
Timothy Griffin of Rhode Island; and Amer Kamal, a Palestinian
exchange student from Israel.
