To help you plan coverage of USM's 125th Commencement, here is the outline
of the ceremony.
TIME/PLACE:
9 a.m.-12 noon, this Saturday, May 14, Cumberland County Civic Center,
Portland. Nearly 1,000 graduates will participate in the ceremony. There
are 1,632 eligible graduates in the Class of 2005, USM's largest graduating
class.
CEREMONY SCHEDULE:
8:15 Graduates line up.
9:00 Ceremony begins.
9:30 Student commencement address, Aaron Keller (text available).
9:45 Distinguished Achievement Awards to David B. Hawkes, Theresa Secord,
and Senator Olympia J. Snowe.
10:00 Honorary Degrees to Barbro Osher, Bernard Osher and Kirk Pond.
10:15 Keynote address, U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe.
10:35 Presentation of diplomas to individual graduates.
12 noon Ceremony ends.
AWARD RECIPIENTS:
Distinguished Achievement Awards for significant academic or professional
achievement and a strong commitment to public service to U.S. Senator
Olympia J. Snowe; Executive Director of the Maine Indian Basket Makers
Alliance Theresa Secord ('81) of Waterville, and local business owner
and consultant David B. Hawkes ('66, '69L) of Falmouth.
Honorary degrees to President and Chair of the Board of the Bernard Osher
Foundation Barbro Osher; businessman, community leader, and patron of
the arts and education, Bernard Osher; and Chairmain of the Board of Fairchild
Semiconductor Kirk Pond.
INTERESTING GRADUATES:
Ismail Ahmed is the first graduate of the USM Lewiston-Auburn College
master's program in leadership studies. A Somali immigrant, Ahmed spent
years in a Kenyan camp teaching himself English and Swahili while caring
for his mother and siblings, and later, his own wife and children. Arriving
in Lewiston in December 2001, Ahmed began taking classes and has become
involved in Toastmaster International and the Lewiston Rotary Club. He
co-founded USM's International Student Organization of Lewiston-Auburn;
became a founding member of Lewiston's United Communities Coalition; was
named recipient of USM's student award for outstanding contributions to
student diversity.
Rosie Schoneberg, a 2002 graduate of Bonny Eagle High School, is graduating
one year early to begin her studies at The American Musical and Dramatic
Academy in Manhattan. She began studying voice with USM Professor of Music
Ellen Chickering the summer following her freshman year of high school.
Schoneberg won the Best of Broadway division of the 2003 Best New Talent
competition.
