Film and Panel Discussion

March 4, 2005

"Oil on Ice," an award-winning documentary about the controversy over drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, will be shown at the University of Southern Maine on Monday, April 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the University Events Room on the 7 Floor of the Glickman Family Library on the Portland campus.

The film (6:30-7:30 p.m.) will be followed by a panel discussion and question period (7:30-8:30 p.m.). The panelists will be USM faculty with backgrounds in business, environmental anthropology, and environmental conservation.

The event is free and open to the public. Light, environmentally-friendly refreshments will be served.

The film is the winner of the 2004 Pare Lorentz Award, International Documentary Association. The film makes the connection between America's energy policy and the fate of the Arctic Refuge and the communities that depend on it. Information on the film is available at http://www.oilonice.org.

The event is being co-sponsored by the USM Office of Sustainability and the Environmental Perspectives in Film Series. The film is being made available courtesy of the Sierra Club.
