USM's Doctoral Program in School Psychology Accepting Applications

March 18, 2005

A Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in School Psychology at the University of Southern Maine--designed to address a critical shortage of school psychology professionals in Maine and northern New England--will open this September.

Applications are being accepted between now and April 8. Information and applications can be obtained from Robin Audesse, associate director of graduate admissions (raudesse@usm.maine.edu) or 780-5913.

This program will be the only program of its type in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Current Maine Department of Education data shows there are approximately 120 full-time equivalent Certified School Psychological Service Providers (CSPSP) practicing in Maine, or one school psychologist for every 1, 750 students.

In addition to Professor Mark W. Steege and Associate Professor Rachel Brown-Chidsey, the program welcomes new Associate Professor F. Charles (Bud) Mace. All three faculty members are licensed psychologists with backgrounds in graduate teaching, research, and public service.

This doctorate in USM's College of Education and Human Development was approved by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees in September 2003.

The Psy.D. in school psychology is designed to meet and exceed the educational standards required for credentialing as a Licensed Psychologist, the highest level of professional practice in psychology. The Psy.D. is USM's second doctoral program. The USM Muskie School offers a Ph.D. in public policy.
