USM to offer new program in Construction Management in Fall 2006

May 15, 2006

The USM department of technology will offer a new academic program in construction management in the fall semester 2006.

Construction management is identified by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of the fastest growing industries in the United States and one of the top ten career fields most in demand. Growth at the national level has created substantial demand for a workforce with varying levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities, to include baccalaureate degree holders.

The USM concentration is designed to prepare graduates for advancement in construction-related industries, primarily as site managers, superintendents, project managers, and directors of operations. Graduates will be exposed to courses emphasizing theory and application of managing, directing, organizing and controlling construction operations.

This concentration is initially available only to students having completed a construction-related associate degree from a regionally-accredited community or technical college, or to non-traditional and transfer students working in industry who already have sufficient proven technical competence to satisfy the state standards for construction-related secondary/vocational education.

Nationally, there are more than 70 four-year institutions offering accredited construction management programs, but only a limited number in the New England region.

The Department of Technology is housed in USM's School of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology.

For more information on this new degree program, contact professor Fred Walker, chair of the USM Department of Technology at 207-780-5440 or hfwalker@usm.maine.edu.
