News Releases"Governance for Families in Business" Conference June 14-17 May 18, 2006A three-day governance seminar designed to guide family-owned businesses through the daunting challenges of creating high-performing boards will be held in Maine June 14-17. The seminar is sponsored by the University of Southern Maine's Institute for Family-Owned Business. This is believed to be one of only two such seminars that focus on governance and provide education and interactive learning specifically designed to help family-owned businesses. Faculty Chair Jack Moore says, "All of the faculty are experienced directors. We have served on a total of 44 family businesses and 18 other closely-held and publicly-traded companies. We will be sharing our experience on how boards help family businesses make a significant difference in the family's legacy, wealth accumulation, and teamwork, as well as their greater profitability and competitiveness." He adds, "When it comes to the family's greatest asset, developing a high-performing board may be the best investment family owners ever make." Keynoters include top business professionals from L.L. Bean, Benjamin Moore Paints, Tom's of Maine, and the New York Times Company. The seminar will be held at the Black Point Inn in Scarborough, Maine. Fees include room and meals, with a significant discount for the second registrant from the same family business. There will also be, of course, a traditional Maine lobster bake. Full details of the conference and its variety of sessions are available at www.usm.maine.edu/ifob.
