News ReleasesUSM Panel Focuses on Poverty's Impact in Maine March 6 , 2006A panel focusing on the impact that living in poverty has on education and learning will be hosted by USM's College of Education and Human Development from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, in Room 301, Bailey Hall, Gorham campus. "Understanding Poverty and Its impact in Maine: Voices from the Community" is the final panel in the yearlong series that focuses on the social, educational, and economic effect of poverty in Maine. The panel is free and open to the public. Panelists include Carolyn May of Maine Centers for Women, Work, and Community, who will speak on women and work; Mark Lapping, distinguished professor, USM Muskie School, and Michael Hillard, USM professor of economics, who will speak on issues of work and poverty in rural areas; and Jean Bragan of Sacopee Valley High School and Liz Rose-Cohen of Portland West will speak on the intersections of work, poverty, and education. Each panelist will offer a brief presentation followed by roundtable sessions, during which members of the audience will have the opportunity to discuss issues raised with the presenters.
