USM Celebrates Its Multicultural Students

May 4, 2006

The USM Office of Multicultural Student Affairs will host the 6th annual Graduation and Recognition Dinner from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, May 10. The event recognizes the accomplishments of the record 63 racial and ethnically underrepresented students who will be graduating in USM’s Commencement slated for Saturday, May 13.

The evening promises to be a colorful blend of food and entertainment featuring student performers who hail from Gambia, the Sudan, Bosnia, Morocco, and the Pasamaquoddy Nation as they present performances ranging from Native drumming, to West African drumming, Hip Hop dance and Flamenco guitar.  Dinner will be provided by local businesses, including La Bodega Latina, Honey’s Place Catering, Bangkok Thai and Florence Olebe.

Indriani Demers, a Chinese-Indonesian graduate student, will present the multicultural commencement speech. Awards will be presented to Outstanding Multicultural Student Leaders, and to organizations and people who have made outstanding contributions to the multicultural community.

The media is invited to attend the event.  For help arranging coverage, please call Judie O’Malley at 780-4200.
