University of Maine School of Law Graduation May 27

May 22, 2006

Graduation for the Class of 2006 of the University of Maine School of Law takes place Saturday, May 27th, at 10:00 a.m. at Merrill Auditorium, Portland City Hall. Some 97 graduates and more than 1,000 friends and guests are expected at the ceremonies.

Dean of the Maine School of Law, Peter Pitegoff, will preside.

The commencement address will be delivered by David T. Flanagan, most recently General Counsel to the Senate Homeland Security and Government Administration Committee, supervising the Senate investigation of the Hurricane Katrina response. From Jan. 1994, to Dec. 2001, he served as president and CEO of Central Maine Power. Mr. Flanagan holds a J.D. degree from Boston College Law School, an M.A. from the University of London, and a B.A. from Harvard College.

At the ceremonies, the Law School faculty will recognize Patricia A. Peard, class of 1988, with the L. Kinvin Wroth Award, given each year to a distinguished alumnus of the Law School. At the Portland law firm of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, Ms. Peard is co-chair of the firm's litigation group and chair of the firm's educational group. She is a highly respected attorney in Maine and has been a leading advocate regarding civil rights issues.

The Law School, which is located on the campus of the University of Southern Maine, graduates leaders in law, business and public service both in Maine and throughout the nation. In addition to joining many of Maine's most prominent law firms, many members of the Class of 2006 have accepted positions as law clerks in courts from Maine to Alaska. Several have also accepted senior level government appointments.
