News ReleasesUSM Hosts Meetings on University Commons Project June 20, 2006The University of Southern Maine will be hosting two meetings in late June to give members of the public an opportunity to learn more about University Commons, a redevelopment of university-owned land in Portland that runs between the Abromson Community Education Center and the Glickman Family Library, bordered by I-295 on one side and Bedford Street on the other. Meetings have been scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, in the University Events Room on the seventh floor of USM's Glickman Family Library, at the intersection of Forest Ave. and Bedford St., Portland. The public is invited to attend whichever meeting is most convenient. Architects from Koetter Kim & Associates, and other members of USM's design team, will attend. The University Commons proposal includes a new home for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the Muskie School of Public Service; an expanded Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education, which is located on the first floor of the Glickman Family Library; a redesign of the Glickman Family Library so that the main entrance faces campus; and a public promenade. Later this summer, USM will be filing an application with the City of Portland to initiate the approval process for University Commons. Call USM at 780-4200 for more information, or e-mail caswell@usm.maine.edu. |
