Back in the heyday of jazz, innovative artists such as Davis, Parker, and Coltrane turned to the music of Gershwin, Porter, and Arlen for their inspiration. The resulting style is what is now known as "the jazz standard." Today musicians like Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, and Kurt Rosenwinkel draw inspiration from contemporaneous rock and popular music. The USM Faculty Jazz Ensemble will present their version of “The New Standard,” reimagining and deconstructing the music of Lennon & McCartney, Joni Mitchell and Radiohead, to name a few.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for seniors and USM employees and alumni, and $5 for students. Make reservations online at www.usm.maine.edu/music/boxoffice, or call the USM Music Box Office at (207) 780-5555.
