LISTEN: Alumni Compositions
For the 10th anniversary of the USM Composers Ensemble, directed by Daniel Sonenberg, Associate Professor and Resident Composer, School of Music alumni were commissioned to write pieces for the celebratory concert, held in April 2015.
Timothy Burns, a horn player, percussionist, and conductor, holds a BA in Music Education and an MM in Composition from USM. His works are frequently performed throughout northern New England by ensembles such as the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, Casco Bay Wind Symphony, and University of Southern Maine Wind Ensemble. Recently, the Da Capo Chamber Players played his piece Night Visions, and his string quartet,and so to dark, was performed by ETHEL. Burns is
Paul Thomas, a composer and horn player, holds a BM in Music Performance and an MM in Composition from USM. He has performed with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony, and the Bowling Green, Kentucky, Symphony and is a member of the Norumbega brass ensemble.
WATCH and LISTEN: Laura Kargul and Ronald Lantz Perform on WCSH 207
For the past 5 years or so, pianist Laura Kargul, USM Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies, and violinist Ronald Lantz, of the Portland String Quartet, have performed a special Valentine's Day concert. For their February 2015 concert, The Secret Loves of the Great Romantics, they performed works of Brahms, Dvořák, Mendelssohn and Fauré, among others. In the spirit of the season, they shared their insights into the music and revealed the secret loves that inspired these passionate composers.
WATCH and LISTEN: USM Youth Ensembles Perform a Reny's Version Carmina Burana
The USM School of Music teamed up with Reny's in the winter of 2014/2015 for several commercial shoots. In this video, the instrumental and choral youth ensembles, conducted by Robert Lehmann, Professor of Music and Director of String Studies and Orchestral Activities, perform in Portland's Merrill Auditorium.

More Than a Little Night Music was an elegant evening in support of scholarships for USM School of Music students. Held at the USM Abromson Center on December 5, 2014, guests were treated to gourmet food and wine pairings, dessert, an espresso and capuccino bar, live auction, silent auction, raffle, and music all night long from our acclaimed music students.

WATCH and LISTEN: Composers Ensemble and Srinivas Krishnan performing
Video clip from the April 19, 2013 Composers Showcase Concert featuring the USM Composers Ensemble with special guest, Srinivas Krishnan, performing A.R. Rahman's "Elay Keechan". Krishnan, a frequent collaborator with Rahman, the great film composer, worked intensively with the group and some guest vocalists to prepare a thrilling set, infusing the Showcase with an exciting global flavor.
