37th Annual Honors Recital
Celebrating excellence in undergraduate music performance, the USM School of Music will present its 37th Annual Honors Recital next week on the Gorham campus.
USM Opera Costume Collection
The men’s and women’s costumes, designed and created by Boston fashion professional Helen H. Friedman, includes full sets of costumes for such productions as “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” “Lady in the Dark,” “The Mikado,” “The Pirates of Penzance” and other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
Merrill Auditorium
The School of Music is known for presenting several concerts in Portland each season, in addition to a busy schedule of concerts, master classes and special events on the USM Gorham campus and numerous venues in Gorham.

USM Jazz EnsembleThe USM Jazz Ensemble is a student group that epitomizes “big band” sound, working under the direction of Christopher Oberholtzer, USM professor of music and director of jazz studies. The ensemble will perform traditional swing music, as well as innovative compositions and arrangements.

The USM Vocal Jazz Ensemble is a chamber-sized group of students who work under the direction of Brent LaCasce, USM vocal jazz artist faculty. The ensemble will perform intricate arrangements of jazz standards, as well as pieces written specifically for vocal jazz ensembles. Per the ensemble’s custom, the performance will include improvised vocal solos.

Southern Maine Symphony OrchestraThe USM School of Music presents the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Lehmann, USM director of string studies and orchestral activities, in concert with the winners of the USM School of Music 2014 Concerto/Aria Competition.

The symphony orchestra will perform Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24. The competition winners performance includes:
Jordan Dube and Dalton Ringey, clarinets - Franz V. Krommer’s Concerto, E-flat, Op. 35 
Annie Leonardi, soprano - Arias from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Puccini’s La Rondine 
Amanda Raymond, piano - C. Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2, G minor

Composers EnsembleThe USM Composers Ensemble is a group of more than 30 students who work collaboratively to rehearse and debut pieces that each student individually composes, under the direction of Dan Sonenberg, USM associate professor of Music and resident composer. Each semester culminates with a final Showcase Concert, which features the ensemble performing wholly original work.
