Barbara M. Fraumeni joined the USM Muskie School of Public Service in 2005 as a Professor of Public Policy and Chair of the Ph.D. Program in Public Policy. She currently serves on the National Research Council/Transportation Research Board’s Value of Transportation Infrastructure Task Force and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics/U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Advisory Committee. In the past, she has served on a number of National Academies of Science, United Nations, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and Eurostat task forces, panels, and advisory committees on human capital, innovation, productivity, nonmarket activities, and sustainability topics.
Dr. Fraumeni is a Special-term Professor and Senior Fellow of the China Center for Human Capital and Labor Market Research of the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing and a Research Fellow of the Bureau of Economic Research. She previously served as Chair of the American Economics Association's Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession and Chief Economist of the Bureau of Economic Analysis. She has won CSWEP’s Carolyn Shaw Bell award for advancing the status of women in the economics profession and a U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal for her innovative research treating R&D as investment in GDP. She has almost 100 publications and holds undergraduate and doctoral degrees in economics.
After graduation from Wellesley, she became a Research Assistant for Dale W. Jorgenson of the Department of Economics and the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, beginning a research collaboration that continues to the present. From 1982 through 1998, Dr. Fraumeni was a Professor at Northeastern University. From 1988 through 1998, she was also a Research Fellow of the Program on Technology and Economic Policy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
At Muskie School, Dr. Fraumeni serves as Chair of the Public Policy and Management Master's Program and the Ph.D. Program in Public Policy, and is a Professor of Public Policy.
