Our plenary speaker this year is Jonathan Welch, MD, MSc, Instructor of Medicine at Harvard and attending emergency physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is also the author of the recent Health Affairsarticle, “As She Lay Dying: How I Fought to Stop Medical Errors From Killing My Mom.”
In his presentation, As She Lay Dying: How Healthcare Can Partner with Patients and Families to Improve Safety, Dr. Welch will describe how he came to learn about the important role that patients and families play in improving safety. Transitioning from the role of physician to one of family member and advocate for his own mother's care, Dr. Welch details what he learned about the patient and family member role in safety when his mother's care went terribly awry.
