Richard Barringer and Joseph McDonnell of USM's Muskie School of Public Service contributed to an Op Ed in the Portland Press Herald along with John Dorrer, formerly with the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, and Ryan Wallace from USM's Maine Center for Business and Economic Research. The plans outlined in the article were also feautured in the Bangor Daily News.
The Op Ed was about population growth in Portland. They outlined plans for how the city could handle, and best utilize this growth. The article went on to say that a large majority of Portland’s workers are commuters, and since the 1950s Portland’s residential population has dropped by 11,000 people. This upcoming population growth could give Portland the chance to restore its streets and become a strong city once again.
