Daniel Sonenberg, USM associate professor of music and resident composer, recently was awarded the Provost’s Research Fellowship allowing him to work on the orchestration of his opera “The Summer King.” He is a resident of Portland.

“The Summer King” details the life of Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson who played from 1930-1946. Gibson, who was known as the “Black Babe Ruth,” died three months before the integration of baseball in the Major Leagues.

Sonenberg describes his work as a labor of love that has taken eight years to conceive and create. Portland Ovations has included a May 8 concert performance premiere of the opera in its upcoming 2013-2014 season.

The USM Provost’s Research Fellowship is designed to allow the recipient, who must be a tenured professor, the opportunity to spend time on activities related to research, creative work and scholarly attainment. Recipients are chosen through a competitive process.

Sonenberg was also awarded the Trustee Professorship which is given by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees to reward excellence among faculty members at University of Maine System campuses.

Faculty Member Alexs Pate Implements the Innocent Classroom in Partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center

A year ago, Stonecoast Faculty member Alexs Pate founded Innocent Technologies LLC to develop and deliver a new teacher training process called the Innocent Classroom which helps to bridge the achievement gap between white students and students of color.

After a year of implementation in Omaha, NE, and in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center, the program has seen early success. Says one teacher of the program, "Attending Innocent Classroom sessions has opened my eyes to many things. I’ve learned that I can be the change in a child’s life that they are looking for. I can be the positivity that they need to grow and learn. I can be the one who loves them unconditionally and my classroom can be their safe place." Students are also benefitting from the program. As told to a teacher one student says, "I just feel like coming to this school, and working with you guys, and getting to do things like this have made me a kid again."

The program's curriculum is based on an approach facilitated by Pate and conceived from Aristotle's philosophy of goodness, "the thing for which all other things are done.” Pate's program constructs an Innocent Classroom through six stages: Understanding, Recognizing, Valuing, Engaging, Nurturing, and Protecting and Advocating. This environment then allows teachers to recognize what Pate calls the child's "unique and innate innocence."

"Without (innocence)," Pate says on the program's website, "guilt is (a child's) only reality. What I call guilt is the consequence of the negative stereotypes that have come to generally define young people of color; especially black children."

For more information about the Innocent Classroom visit http://innocentclassroom.com/.

Working out of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, respectively, Paul and Tony will assist NASA scientists in research that uses satellite imaging and geographic information systems techniques to examine critical global climate and landscape change issues.

The internship will be Paul’s second at the Goddard Center, and both students follow on the heels of other Geography-Anthropology students who have completed internships at NASA centers.

The Geography-Anthropology program offers a specialized curriculum in geospatial technologies and routinely engages undergraduate students on projects funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation.
