Dr. Goldenberg will present research findings about what most challenges teachers of English language learners: promoting development in two distinct but related and complex domains: oral language and reading. He will highlight what we know—and don’t know yet—about this important intersection of skills.

A graduate of Princeton University and the University of California at Los Angeles, Professor Goldenberg has taught at Stanford University Graduate School of Education since 2007. Recent publications include Research on English Learner Instruction in Breaking Through: Effective Instruction & Assessment for Reaching English Learners (M. Calderon, editor, 2012), and Reading Instruction for English Language Learners in the IRA’s Handbook of Reading Research, Vol. IV (2011). A recent article by Professor Goldenberg, Unlocking the Research on English Learners: What We Know—and Don’t Yet Know—about Effective Instruction, appeared in this summer’s AFT’s American Educator, Vol. 37, No. 2.

Following Dr. Goldenberg’s talk, a panel of Maine ELL teachers, students, and advocates as well as the speaker will respond to audience questions and comments.

The new SMART for Schools Learning Lab at the University of Southern Maine will host an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. on the USM Gorham campus to present educators, parents, students, and community members with information about the lab’s exciting new after-school tutoring program for elementary students in Maine.

Attendees will meet lab tutors, graduate assistants from the USM doctoral program in school psychology and literacy education certificate of advanced study program, as well as the lab director, Dr. Alexis Kiburis. Brief presentations on lab services will provide an overview of the SMART educational philosophy, instructional approach, and use of assessment tools. Attendees will also learn more about the supervised, applied learning experiences graduate assistants receive while working in the lab.

The SMART Learning Lab is an after-school tutoring program that provides free or low-cost services for kindergarten through fifth grade students who are reading below grade level. Students are not required to reside in Gorham to access the lab; currently, the lab works with students from Yarmouth, Portland, and Windham and is accepting new students from towns or districts in southern Maine.

The SMART Learning Lab is funded through a generous three-year grant from the Reading Matters to Maine Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

The open house will be held at the lab, which is housed at 62 School Street, Gorham. Attendees are welcome to stop by at any time during the event.
