The USM Pioneers Program is empowering a new generation of scientists, information technology specialists, engineers, and mathematicians. Pioneers engage in advanced cirriculum and highly innovative programming to maximize education growth.

By graduation, Pioneer scholars will have completed high-impact, experiential learning opportunities designed to deepen their knowledge in STEM and to prepare them for careers after graduation.

Patrick Doherty and Deedra Zeeh, sophomores in USM’s Pioneers Program, collaborated with professor of Engineering James Masi to develop a nano-particle alternative that is easy to implement at low temperatures in a lab or classroom setting.
To encourage Maine students to pursue studies in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, Nestlé Waters North America, the nation’s leading bottled water company, has pledged $100,000 to support the USM Pioneers Program.
Sappi Fine Paper North America, a leading global paper company, has pledged $100,000 over the course of four years to support the USM Pioneers Program.

Pioneers Application Deadlines

Students wishing to become a USM Pioneer must submit a supplemental Pioneers application by March 20, 2015. Interviews for the Program will take place in the John Mitchell Center on the Gorham campus.
