We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."  

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt. 

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

This omni-dome show uses the entire dome as the screen for a visually immersive experience.

"The Philosopher's Dome" involves a lecture format.  Share your ideas about the profoundest questions of life, nature, ethics, and a variety of other topics.     The only pre-requisite is an interest in philosophy and an inclination to share that interest with others.

IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System

An omni-dome (full dome) presentation about the IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) probe.      Launched in 2008, the IBEX craft collects energized neutral particles emitted from the heliosphere: the "bubble" enclosing the solar system.   These collections enable the IBEX probe to construct an image of the membrane surrounding us.  The same membrane that protects the solar system from harmful galactic particles.

How does the IBEX probe work?    How does it communicate with Earth?

Join us for this fascinating full-dome show about the IBEX probe and its bold mission to explore the solar system's final frontier.

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System

An omni-dome (full dome) presentation about the IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) probe.      Launched in 2008, the IBEX craft collects energized neutral particles emitted from the heliosphere: the "bubble" enclosing the solar system.   These collections enable the IBEX probe to construct an image of the membrane surrounding us.  The same membrane that protects the solar system from harmful galactic particles.

How does the IBEX probe work?    How does it communicate with Earth?

Join us for this fascinating full-dome show about the IBEX probe and its bold mission to explore the solar system's final frontier.

A new planetarium program commemorating the old spirit of St. Patrick's Day


While the upper world convulses with the tumult of St, Patrick's Day revelers, the Southworth Planetarium will commemorate the holiday with a more elegiac and celestial observance:  an event that blends the ancient Irish elements of stones, stories and stars.    This program represents an amalgam of stone circles; celestial mythology; and Irish legends.     Our stone circle scholar, Lawrence Price, will guide you through some of Ireland's most exquisitely beautiful and storied stone circles: such as Lough Crew, the witch's hill; and the Hill of Tara, which has witnessed the coronations of 142 ancient Irish kings. Also, the colossal Newgrange, designed to capture the solstice sunrise and, astonishingly, the moon cycles.


 


Experience Michele's Cheung's tales from Eire: an ancient world pervaded by sorcery and mysticism.  Sages and songs from an island of story tellers.


 


We then turn our star projector westward: admiring the old Irish constellations:  Laoch Caithete Saighead, the "Hero of the thrown arrows," or the river goddess Boann,    We conclude our evening under the heavens: to admire the sky of the ancients.  


 


Though the night of St. Patrick's Day eve promises to be furious and frenetic on Portland's surface  we summon you down into the shadowy underworld to immerse yourself in the spirit and magic of ancient Ireland.

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."  

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt.

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Solar System

"EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING" OMNI DOME SHOW!

We're offering an updated version of the "Eight Planets and Counting" program!     Humanity's knowledge of the solar system has changed dramatically within the last few years.    As we know the International Astronomical Union has demoted Pluto, but astronomers have also found an array of other bodies, called "Trans-Neptunian Objects."  

The omni-dome "Eight Planets and Counting" program guides you through the solar system: from our parent star, the Sun, out to the realm beyond Neptune.   Along the way, we'll visit each of the eight planets in turn, we'll explore the Moon, and we'll fly through the asteroid belt. 

Join us for this fantastic full dome odyssey through the solar system!

IBEX: The Search for the Edge of the Solar System

An omni-dome (full dome) presentation about the IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) probe.      Launched in 2008, the IBEX craft collects energized neutral particles emitted from the heliosphere: the "bubble" enclosing the solar system.   These collections enable the IBEX probe to construct an image of the membrane surrounding us.  The same membrane that protects the solar system from harmful galactic particles.

How does the IBEX probe work?    How does it communicate with Earth?

Join us for this fascinating full-dome show about the IBEX probe and its bold mission to explore the solar system's final frontier.

THE LITTLE STAR THAT COULD

Full dome show

(Presented in the memory of Steve Innes 1955-2011)

A little yellow star travels through the galaxy in search of planets that will give it its special name.  During his journey, this star learns about the many types of stars that live in the galaxy.    Hot blue stars; cool red stars; double stars, large stars and much more.

Produced by the Audio Visual Imagineering Company and based on the popular planetarium show of the same name, "The Little Star That Could"  is an engaging and fun show that introduces your child to the wonders of stellar astronomy.

A splendid star show for the entire family!

This omni-dome show uses the entire dome as the screen for a visually immersive experience.
