Thank you for your service!

Veterans Services at the University of Southern Maine (USM) serves veterans, servicemembers, and their families, who are accessing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits, often referred to as the GI Bill. Services are provided on all three campuses (Portland, Gorham and Lewiston/Auburn).

USM is a military-friendly campus and a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon Program.  USM is also a Servicemembers Opportunity College (SOC).

There are multiple chapters of the GI Bill and navigating the benefits process can be confusing. Transitioning from combat to the classroom can be a challenge, and USM Veterans Services is here to help.

Beginning next year, the U.S. Army will place new restrictions on its Tuition Assistance program to ensure officers and enlisted personnel are focusing more on soldiering than higher education.
Paul Nelson
After USM, Nelson plans to continue his military career from what he’s learned as a political science major. “I plan on going into active duty. I plan on pursuing my military career for fourteen or more years so that I can give back on an even bigger scale,” he said. “I want to see things be different and be a part of something bigger than myself. I want to be able to say ‘I helped people, I saved lives,’” Nelson said.

Those who knew Spc. Christopher D. Gelineau describe him as a friendly, reliable young man who loved working with computers & quote; He was a very nice boy. He was patient and quiet; said his aunt, Pam Gelineau. Gelineau, 23, of Portland, Maine, was killed April 20 in an explosion outside Mosul, Iraq. His Army National Guard unit was based in Portland. Gelineau grew up in Vermont and moved to Portland to attend the University of Southern Maine. He was one semester shy of a degree in information and communications technology when he deployed to Iraq in March 2004.
