  “Musicians  United for Marriage”

On Friday October 12 (7pm), four powerful performers will merge in a spirited concert entitled “Musicians United for Marriage.” On board for this exciting event are Cidny Bullens, Lynn Deeves, & Trina Hamlin. The show will be held at the Wishcamper Center, Room 102, at 34 Bedford Street at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Me. The event is sponsored by U.S.M.’s Women and Gender Studies/ Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity. Partial proceeds benefit Mainers United for Marriage-the campaign to win the freedom to marry for all loving, committed couples in Maine.  www.mainersunited.org/musicians

Tickets are free for USM Students with their student ID.  $20 all others.

Cid Bullens is a two-time Grammy nominee with a career that’s gone from            singing back-up with Elton John and lead vocals on the “Grease” movie soundtrack-- to having eight critically acclaimed solo albums. Guests include friends Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Delbert McClinton and Sir Elton. Cid is one-third of “super-group”- The Refugees- with Wendy Waldman and Deborah Holland.

Lynn Deeves came to the stage via the New England top-40 rock circuit in “spandex and spiked hair.” She has released four independent CD’s and performed with Chris Williamson/Tret Fure, Suede and Catie Curtis. Portland Press Herald says: “…5 star stage presence…this gals’ got a set of pipes…” Deeves was recently invited to contribute a track to the “Pink Album”- a compilation CD to benefit the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition.

Minneapolis-born songwriter, Trina Hamlin attended Berklee School of Music. After singing voice-overs for commercials, she gained the national spotlight with songs featured on TV’s “Dawson’s Creek”, television with Conan O’Brien and radio with Rick Dees. She tours with Susan Werner’s band and has opened for Rickie Lee Jones and John Hiatt. Hamlin’s trademarks are her soulful harmonica-wailings and fun presence.

This dynamic and entertaining foursome will unite for the cause with joy and power, using soaring harmonies, guitars, harmonica, flute and percussion to create a “joyful noise.”  FMI: call #(207) 780-5767.

Dear USM Community Members,

I am very pleased to announce that Amy Richlin, Professor of Classics at UCLA and groundbreaking scholar in the field of ancient sexuality, will speak at USM on Thursday, October 18 at 7:30 pm in the Lee Auditorium of the Wishcamper Center. She will give a talk called "Unexpurgated Classics: Profane Texts in a Christian Curriculum."

Professor Richlin's most famous book is The Garden of Priapus: Sexuality and Aggression in Roman Humor (Oxford University Press 1992), and she has published widely; her work is relevant to many departments and disciplines. Professor Richlin is the speaker of choice for USM's Student Classics Club. Additionally, her visit is in part a celebration of humanities at USM and the new online Liberal Studies-Humanities major - a collaboration of Outreach and the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and designed by faculty in the Departments of English, History, and Philosophy, and the Classics Program.

In preparation for Professor Richlin's visit, I have established a Blackboard site for all USM Community members, an online book club where USM faculty, staff, and students can read and discuss a small selection of Richlin's works. Please use the discussion board on the site to contact other readers about Richlin's work and to open a USM-wide discussion. Everyone at USM can self-enroll in the site called "Amy Richlin USM Community Reading Group." Please be in touch with the Helpdesk at 780-4029 if you need help with Blackboard.

Sponsors of Richlin's visit include the Classics Program, the Classics Club, the English Department, the History and Political Science Department, the Liberal Studies-Humanities Program, the Theater Department, Women and Gender Studies Program, and the Department of Modern Languages. If your department or program would like to help sponsor this event, please email me at juzzi@usm.maine.edu.

An Evening with Bishop Gene Robinson
Reflections on marriage and his new book
God Believes in Love: Straight Talk on Gay Marriage
Just two weeks before a historical vote on Question 1, to allow the State of Maine to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Religious Coalition Against Discrimination, Integrity Maine and the Cathedral of St. Luke will host an evening with Bishop Gene Robinson on Tuesday, October 23rd, at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral. He will be available to sign his new book at 6:30 PM. The Bishop is the central figure in the acclaimed documentary “Love Free or Die”, the story of the Bishop’s journey to become the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church of America. In his new book, God Believes in Love: Straight Talk on Gay Marriage, Bishop Gene Robinson makes the case for same-sex marriage. For him, it’s a personal issue; after being married to a woman with whom he had two children. Bishop Robinson has been married to his long-term partner, a man, for the last four years.Bishop Robinson’s book is an exploration of faith and morality that will help readers to better understand why full marriage equality is vitally important — why it is a violation of civil rights to deny access to marriage because of sexual orientation. In his visit to Portland, he’ll address important, frequently asked questions like: What’s wrong with civil unions? Don’t children need a mother and a father? Why should straight people care about gay marriage? Join us for a provocative and personal discussion of one of the most important–and divisive–issues of our day.The Cathedral of St. Luke, 143 State St., Portland

A Reconstruction of Gender

F to eMbody, a gender deviant, multimedia, spoken-word, homo-hop extravaganza, features two of  the most well-recognized trans-masculine performers around: Rocco Kayiatos and Harvey Katz.

Hip hop artist Rocco "Katastrophe" Kayiatos and spoken word poet Harvey Katz, a.k.a. Athens Boys Choir, present performances that aim to both entertain and offer insights into the transgender experience.

Yale Daily News reporter Yvette Borja wrote that "Katz's art is unabashedly personal, subversive without being caustic." He uses video and pop culture spoofs to shed light on his own experiences.

"Kayiatos rapped about his difficulty fitting in during high school and the bouts of depression that he experienced periodically throughout his life," Borja wrote. "Nonetheless, he kept it light by introducing his songs with the anecdotes that often served as the inspiration behind his work.

"Like Katz, his presentation was a balancing act: art that makes us laugh while simultaneously showing the darkness underneath."

Co-sponsoring their performance are the women and gender studies program, OUTfront, the Office of the Special Assistant to the President, the Bates Learning Commons, and the departments of arts and visual culture and of music.
