Description:
Eliot Cutler - founding chair of One Maine, Muskie School advisory board member, entrepreneur, and public servant - will talk about the challenges and opportunities that public servants and state and local governments will confront during the next two decades in Maine. We need to change Maine's equations. How do we make Maine younger, wealthier, more efficient, and more diverse?

The lecture, sponsored by the USM Muskie School of Public Service, is free and open to the public.

Speaker Bio:
Eliot CutlerEliot Cutler has forged a 40-year career marked by success in government service, law, and business. As an aide to Senator Edmund Muskie, he helped craft the Clean Air Act, the Water Pollution Control Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. From 1977 to 1980, he served as Associate Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and was President Carter’s principal aide in the environmental, natural resources, and energy areas.

A graduate of Harvard College and Georgetown University Law Center, Cutler is Emeritus Trustee of the Thornburg Investment Trust, a family of publicly traded mutual funds. Cutler also was the first American member of the board of directors of the worldwide construction company Skanska AB and a director of the International Law Institute. He was an independent candidate for Maine governor in 2010, finishing second by a margin of 9,000 votes; his 36.3% of the votes was the highest percentage of any independent candidate for major office in the United States in 2010.

David Shaw - founder, former CEO, and executive chairman of Ikaria Holdings, founder and retired CEO of IDEXX Laboratories, and director/founding investor of more than a dozen public and private companies - will discuss his adventures in entrepreneurial leadership.

Speaker Bio:
David ShawDavid Shaw is the managing partner of Black Point Group, with wide-ranging interests in technology companies and public service. His business experience includes IDEXX (founder/CEO), Ikaria (founding CEO/chair), Sapphire Energy (director/investor), Ironwood Pharmaceuticals (director/investor), DirectVetMarketing (co-founder/chair), Itaconix (director/investor), Skinetics (co-founder), Cytyc (director/investor), Magen (director), Physion (director), Cambria (director), Venrock (partner), New Mountain Capital (senior advisor), the film Albert Nobbs (executive producer), and others.    

Shaw has served on the faculty of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the advisory board of the Center for Public Leadership. He is the treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, director of the National Parks Foundation, and science advisory board member to Discovery Communications. Other affiliations have included chair of The Jackson Laboratory, board member of Maine Medical Center and Hurricane Island Outward Bound, and member of the Executive Committee of the US-Israel Science and Technology Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations, and ServiceNation.

Sex trafficking and exploitation are happening here in Portland. Please join the Justice Policy Program at the USM Muskie School of Public Service for a brown bag lunch-and-learn to learn more about this issue and the Greater Portland community's response. 

Speakers include social service providers, a police officer on the front lines, representatives of the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the FBI who work to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime.
