4th Annual Patient Safety Academy

The Patient Safety Academy is returning for its fourth year! Last year, more than 150 health care professionals, representing Maine hospitals, physician practices, pharmacies, long-term care facilities, agencies, organizations, and advocacy groups, participated in the academy's knowledge- and skill-building workshops, including “Little Shop of Errors,” a new workshop that utilized the USM School of Nursing’s Simulation Lab.

The 2013 plenary speaker is Jonathan Welch, MD, MSc, instructor of medicine at Harvard and attending emergency physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is also the author of the recent Health Affairs article, “As She Lay Dying: How I Fought to Stop Medical Errors from Killing My Mom.”  Hosted by the Muskie School of Public Service.

Open to the public; $50 registration fee/$25 for students

Inaugural Celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Southern Maine

In partnership with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China, USM has established the state’s first Confucius Institute. With an initial focus on language, culture, and education, the institute will provide Maine's educators, businesspeople, and community members with opportunities to engage in Chinese studies. The USM Confucius Institute joins more than approximately 400 institutes throughout the world and 90 institutes nationwide.

Join President Theo Kalikow, Dean Joseph McDonnell, USM friends and community members, members of the Chinese consulate, and representatives from Dongbei in celebrating this new venture with an evening of festivities, including a Chinese dance performance, art exhibit, and ceremonial tree planting.
