The Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs of the Legislature requested that a strategic plan for nursing for the State of Maine be drafted jointly by the Community College System and the University of Maine System.

2004

    • In January 2004 OMNE Nursing Leaders of Maine issued the "2003 Overview of Maine's Nursing Graduate Capacity". At the directive of the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs, OMNE convened interested parties in 2003 to conduct a nursing graduate capacity study. Recommendations included permanent funding to providing ongoing nursing workforce data collection and analysis, permanent accountability for assessing the impact of changes in health care and nursing workforce initiatives; passage of legislation to create a nursing faculty loan repayment program; and, University System and Community College system initiatives to increase funding to provide competitive nursing faculty wages and collaborative planning.

  • The Committee to Address the Health Care Skilled Worker Shortage, comprised of health care leaders, state legislators, and higher education officials, called for a series of actions in 2003 to address worker shortages.

  • In May 2002 OMNE Nursing Leaders of Maine issued the "2002 Overview on Maine's Nursing and Health Care Workforce". At the directive of the Health and Human Services Committee, OMNE convened interested parties to meet and review LD 1085 Resolve, To Improve Staffing in Healthcare Settings and LD 1346, Resolve, To Establish a Commission to Study the Healthcare Workforce Shortage. Recommendations included strategies related to image, education, and best practices to improve the work environment.
