Two Questions: 1) Auditing Classes 2) Involving Emeriti

Posted on August 9th, 2006 by Julia Ridge, OLLI National Resource Center

1. Oringinal question from Connie Corley at California State University Los Angeles:

“I am aware that some OLLIs have special arrangements with their campuses for OLLI members to be able to audit classes that are for credit and/or degree programs; if there are any that do this at a reduced rate for OLLI members I’d like to contact them.”

2. Oringinal question from Sharon Sokoloff, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Brandeis University:

“I’m working with a former Brandeis professor who is working with us on “connecting with emeriti and getting them involved with our OLLI” which is slow process with some results. He’d like to talk with others in the network who have done this successfully.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sending Volunteers to Conferences

Posted on August 7th, 2006 by Julia Ridge, OLLI National Resource Center

The original question from Ara Rogers, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, University Southern Florida, Tampa

How we might utilize Osher funds to support conference attendance among our program volunteers? (1)  Do you ’send’ your volunteer instructors, leaders, others to conferences?  (2) If so, what parameters do you put around this expenditure?  Registration fee only, travel and hotel only, all expenses up to a certain amount? (3) What, if any ‘payback’ might I reasonably request?  Read the rest of this entry »

OLLI Financial Structure

Posted on August 7th, 2006 by Julia Ridge, OLLI National Resource Center

The original question from Deborah Worthley, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, University of Vermont:

For those OLLIs which are under the umbrella of  your university’s non-profit status (as opposed to a separate 501(C)(3)status,) does your financial structure or relationship with your university allow your OLLI to create separate non-university account(s) to process income/expense activity including standard financial transactions such as membership deposits and check writing for faculty payment? Annual Membership

Posted on August 7th, 2006 by Julia Ridge, OLLI National Resource Center

The original question from Barry Bortnick, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, University of California Los Angeles

I have a question regarding what other institutions are doing regarding annual membership for their Osher members. I am referring particularly to those institutions that allow people to sign up for a year and receive in turn a certain number of complimentary courses and other benefits that they can take any time during that period.  My question is whether the period of annual membership is defined as the academic year, or in some other way? For example, as a year starting from the time in which they enroll. (Various other memberships like museum memberships seem to operate in this way.) I presently have a system based on membership from fall through summer, but some of our members are asking us to make it a year from whatever quarter they sign up, e.g., if they sign in spring they have membership and its benefits from spring, through summer, fall, and winter. I am wondering how institutions that provide this are keeping track of the “rolling” membership year and tracking the courses each members has taken or has left to take. Osher Wear/Ware

Posted on August 7th, 2006 by Julia Ridge, OLLI National Resource Center

The original question is from Cathy House, Osher Lifelong Learning, University of Utah

Our members have requested that we consider having “Osher wear/ware” made for them - things like golf shirts, sweat shirts, coffee mugs, etc.  I’d like to explore the possibility of developing something for these items that ties the Osher Institute and the University of Utah together, perhaps some integration of the two logos.  Are you aware of any other institutes who have taken on something like this?” Read the rest of this entry »
