Does your OLLI have a new member recruitment plan?

Posted on May 13th, 2011 by Anne Cardale, OLLI National Resource Center

Cathie Sanders, OLLI at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Asks OLLI:

Does your OLLI have a recruitment plan designed to recruit new members? If so, who produced it? Are there any conventions unique to recruitment plans to be aware of? What are the components that make up a recruitment plan? How do you determine who is responsible for implementing the plan?

  1. not a plan per se, but here are some things we are doing to recruit new members: free program offerings; distribution of Osher schedules to libraries, doctor offices, realtors, etc.; asking current Osher members to recruit their friends; special membership rate when 2 people join together; an annual mixer for members and people who are thinking about joining - - hope this helps!

  2. We do very much the same as the University of Richmond. For the second time, this fall we will offer $50 towards a course when you become a brand new OLLI member - good for that semester only. The first time we did this we recruited over 100 members and the majority of them have since renewed their memberships. We distribute course catalogs to churches, libraries, grocery stores, beauty shops, banks, senior centers and asking our OLLI members to help us do this. We have a public Open House prior to each of our 3 semesters with most of the instructors. We serve refreshments (sponsor donated) provide everyone the opportunity to register for classes. We hold an annual Holiday Gala for OLLI members, instructors and their guests. This past year was the first time they had to pay but we only charged $10. We had an OLLI member as a guest speaker, and OLLI members from the Thespians class present a holiday play for entertainment.
